We would like to recognize the WTF community & our allies who donated to the SJ Brooks Bikexplorers Scholarship last year. Thanks to these generous donations we are able to fund five individual scholarships to attend the 2019 WTF Bikexplorers Summit.

The second WTF Bikexplorers Summit will include four days of clinics, rides, discussions, campfires, and gear testing in Vernonia, OR. Our goal for this year’s Summit is to connect, celebrate and support the growing community of WTFnB cyclists who use their bicycles to explore the world in a way that feels empowering and healing. With these scholarships we hope to support those members of our community who encounter the structural inequalities that can get in the way of getting outside and exploring the world by bike.

We recognize that living the bike life isn’t as free and easy as the internet makes it seem. In an effort to make the Summit as diverse as the world we live we’re offering scholarships for FIVE folks who identify as women, trans, femme, and/or non-binary to attend this year’s summit.

Applications are now closed. We will be announcing the five chosen recipients by April 25th, and for those who applied please look out for an email that same week.

Good luck!

The ideal scholarship recipient will:

  • be WTFnB (Trans men and women, non-binary, and genderqueer folks are encouraged to apply!)
  • have a spirit of adventure and want to grow their bike-packing experience
  • have a need for this scholarship in order to attend the Summit
  • be committed to shredding the patriarchy for the long haul
  • have ideas for future bikepacking trips in mind
  • be enthusiastic about supporting, connecting, and celebrating the WTFnB people in your community
  • arrive with an intention on community building

All five scholarships includes:

In addition, three recipients will receive either a Sequoia, Diverge E5 Elite, or a Chisel Comp from Specialized Bicycles– based on their need.

The WTF Bikexplorers scholarships are named after SJ Brooks. SJ was the founder of the Seattle chapter of Friends on Bikes, a cycling group that fosters a community for women, trans, femme and non-binary people of color who love riding bikes. SJ was scheduled to speak about Friends on Bikes and be a part of the queer people of color panel at the WTF Bikexplorers Summit. On May 19th, SJ was fatally attacked while biking outside of Seattle. SJ’s death is a huge loss to the cycling community. They were a positive light who worked tirelessly to create change. We send our deepest condolences to SJ’s family and loved ones. Our best wishes go to Izzy as well, who is still recovering.

The WTF Bikexplorers 2019 scholarships are funded by the community through the SJ Brooks Foundation.

Product donations are made possible by the generous support of people who work at companies that believe in and support the WTF Bikexplorers’ mission.

Our heartfelt thanks to Specialized Bicycles, Revelate Designs, SimWorks, Big Agnes, Sea To Summit, Ortlieb USA, Bedrock Sandals, Ride with GPS, and the WTF Bikexplorers Community.
